Oak Bay's Anderson Hill Park was crowded June 14 as volunteers worked hard to clear invasive plants from the area.
Under sunny skies, the Greater Victoria Green Team – a community group that works to restore environments across the Capital Regional District – brought 28 locals together to help protect the endangered Garry oak ecosystem.
“Several participants were visiting the park or removing invasive plants for the very first time, deepening their connection to nature while taking meaningful climate action,” the group said in a news release.
Saturday’s meet-up built on years of stewardship at the site, led by longtime volunteer Christina Johnson-Dean. Altogether, participants removed 6.7 cubic metres – equivalent to 44 bathtubs – of invasive Himalayan blackberry and periwinkle.
Those interested in similar actions can head to Solstice Park on Saturday, June 21 from 9:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. and on Sunday, June 22 at Knockan Hill Park – also from 9:45 a.m. to 1 p.m.
