The Victoria Scottish Community Centre will unveil a new welcome sign on Sunday, May 4, celebrating traditional Scottish craftsmanship and cultural heritage in the region.
The handcrafted sign, located at 1803 Admirals Rd., was designed and built by Esquimalt-based Heritage Masonry. It features traditional stone carving, stonemasonry, and blacksmithing techniques using local materials from Vancouver Island.
A carved sandstone unicorn – Scotland’s national animal – by Duncan artist Andrew Swinley, and a metal thistle by Metchosin sculptor Jake James, highlight the sign’s symbolism.
The structure also includes a rare vertical dry-stone wall topped with soil and heather, reminiscent of the traditional peat caps of Highland walls.
The unveiling runs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and will include remarks from artists, Heritage Masonry co-owners Gavin Chamberlain and Liam Hall, as well as community leaders.
