Mill Bay, Malahat firefighters handle brush blaze reported by boater

Boater on Saanich Inlet calls in smoke spotted over Bamberton

A call from someone aboard a boat in the Saanich Inlet is credited with firefighters making quick work of a brush fire Sunday (July 21) evening in Bamberton.

Smoke was spotted and reported shortly after 6 p.m., according to Mill Bay Fire rescue.

The Malahat chief was in the area and confirmed the small brush fire upgrading the call to a general page for crews from Mill Bay and Malahat Fire Rescue to attend.

The fire was quickly knocked down and crews remained on scene to confirm all hot spots were thoroughly soaked down.

“Thank you to the person who reported this smoke sighting as the location of this fire likely would have gone undetected until it was much larger,” reads a Mill Bay Fire Rescue social media post.

Report any sign of fire to 911 or *5555.

The fire rating for that part of the south Island is rated extreme – meaning there are extremely dry forest fuels and the fire risk is serious. New fires will start easily, spread rapidly, and challenge fire suppression efforts.

While there are currently no wildfires active on Vancouver Island, as of Monday (July 22) morning the province is reporting 324 wildfires across B.C. with several communities under evacuation order, or alert.
