Greater Victoria Green Team removes invasive plants from Blenkinsop Valley properties donated to Land Conservancy of BC

A pristine piece of land in Saanich's Blenkinsop Valley is even more inviting today thanks to the efforts of the Greater Victoria Green Team and Land Conservancy of BC.

A group of 41 volunteers removed more than 10 cubic metres (62 bathtubs) of invasive English ivy and English holly, increasing biodiversity and improving habitat for wildlife.

The work took place Oct. 26 on a land covenant on the former property of Joan Alston-Stewart, who left an incredible legacy with an $8.8 million bequest to TLC, marking the largest donation in their history. Her estate gifted TLC three properties near Blenkinsop Lake, ensuring their preservation for generations to come.

The invasive plant removal was part of TLC’s Passport to Nature program, designed to connect people with the natural world in a meaningful way. The Greater Victoria Green Team believes in the transformative power of hands-on environmental activities to empower individuals and strengthen communities. Through initiatives like invasive plant removals, tree plantings, and litter cleanups, the group fosters connections among participants while deepening their relationship with nature.
