Six members of the Saanich Police Department were recognized for their work in taking dozens of impaired drivers off the streets in 2023.
On Dec. 3, the members received an Alexa's Team Award, which requires an officer to submit at least 24 impaired driving cases in a calendar year through a combination of Criminal Code charges and immediate roadside prohibitions.
At a ceremony at the the department, constables Jennifer Allen, Alex Beastall, Adam Defrane, Aaron Grewal, Nick Marmaras and Martin Roznowski were presented with the awards.
Police members who remove 50 impaired drivers within 12 months are awarded Alexa Team All-Star status. Saanich Police noted in a news release that they are proud that Defrane, Grewal and Marmaras reached the milestone.
“While the nature of these numbers is disappointing, I'm extremely proud of the hard work our officers have shown by taking so many impaired drivers off Saanich’s streets. Their dedication has made our community safer," said Chief Const. Dean Duthie in the release. "With so many ride options available, there is no excuse to get behind the wheel of a vehicle while impaired. Be responsible, plan ahead, and take some ownership for maintaining safe roads for everyone.”
In total, the officers issued penalties or charges to 236 drivers throughout the year, with Marmaras leading the effort with 58.
In 2010 Alexa's team was established following the death of four-year-old Alexa Middelaer by an alcohol-impaired driver, which resulted in the formation of immediate roadside prohibitions, a "valuable tool" for police to take impaired drivers off the road.
