A man allegedly drinking from an open beer can after police had already pulled over his truck was one of several traffic violations West Shore RCMP responded to over the weekend.

The beer-drinking incident occurred when an officer pulled over a Nissan Frontier pickup truck along Ocean Boulevard just minutes before midnight on Sunday (Aug. 25).

The 41-year-old driver had an open can of beer in his truck and he "attempted to take one last sip before exiting his vehicle" to talk to the responding officer, West Shore RCMP said.

The man then failed a roadside impairment test, which indicated his blood alcohol level was above the legal limit, police said. The man was issued a 90-day driving prohibition and had his truck impounded for 30 days.

That Colwood incident capped a weekend where police responded to a total of 17 traffic offences on the West Shore that ended with drivers getting tickets.

There were a total of three impaired driving charges laid in Langford and Colwood. That latter community also saw a driver ticketed $368 for driving 40 to 60 km/h over the speed limit. A driver speeding in View Royal landed themselves an even larger ticket, worth $483, after they were clocked going more than 60 km/h over the speed limit.

"With the upcoming long weekend, our officers will be out patrolling and checking for sober drivers. West Shore RCMP would like to remind drivers to please plan for a safe and sober ride home."
