Central Saanich Police have warned locals to be "bear smart" after a black bear was sighted on Thursday, Aug. 15 in the area of Hovey Road and Tomlinson Road.

Police say that no conflict with humans has been reported.

When encountering a bear, it is advised that you remain calm, do not run or climb a tree and slowly back away, talking to the bear in a quiet, monotone voice.

The bear should be given a clear escape route and you should watch the bear until it leaves.
