Victoria residents get their final say in the draft official community plan early next month.
Council adopted its current plan in 2012, following two and a half years of public consultation and feedback from 6,000 people. The previous plan was last updated in 1995. The latest draft focuses on vibrant, walkable villages and maintaining the downtown core. It recognizes the unique neighbourhood character of different parts of the city and emphasizes sustainable transportation.
The proposed new OCP – dubbed Victoria 2050 – would guide and regulate new development across the city. It is structured to enable housing to be built faster and ensure new development supports climate solutions and communities with amenities and services close to home.
Changes include new development permit areas and heritage conservation areas. It includes guidelines for development for land use that aims to meet future housing and employment needs, and low-carbon growth responsive to climate change.
The public hearing is set for Sept. 11 and will be held during the evening meeting at city hall, and online at victoria.ca.
The city hosts an online information session on the public hearing on Wednesday, Aug. 20 from noon to 1 p.m.
