Those interested in learning more about the Capital Regional District and how it works can peruse its progress reports from 2024.
The CRD and the Capital Region Housing Corporation both released 2024 annual reports, providing an overview of the work completed over the last year and highlighting the progress made on the 2023 to 2026 priorities.
“May is a pivotal time for the CRD as it marks our reporting period. It's a valuable time for us to reflect on the accomplishments of the past year," CRD chair Cliff McNeil-Smith said in a news release. “We are now halfway through our board’s term, and it can be easy to overlook the progress we’ve made during our daily work. The annual and progress reports give us the opportunity to celebrate our successes and underscore the value of strategic planning as we see how our plans are taking shape. By focusing on our priorities, we are continuing to build a vibrant, sustainable and resilient region.”
The CRD delivers regional, sub-regional and local services to 13 municipalities and three electoral areas.
Key highlights of 2024 include designing the Rural Housing Program Pilot Project to prototype housing solutions better suited to rural communities, partnering with the province and the federal government to create affordable housing units, improving accessibility and infrastructure in regional parks and on regional trails and strengthening government-to-government relationships with First Nations.
The largest non-profit housing provider on Vancouver Island, the CRHC 2024 annual report outlines work done in the last year toward its commitment to improve and expand housing opportunities. The corporation provides homes to more than 4,200 tenants with 2,028 homes in 53 buildings across eight municipalities. Major accomplishments in 2024 include the completion of Michigan Square and making significant steps toward the completion of the Caledonia project, set to open this year.
