A cougar continues to cruise neighbourhoods in North Saanich, and residents are encouraged to remain cautious.
The wild animal was spotted most recently on Heather Road at Maple and Tatlow roads, North Saanich Fire Department shared on social media.
“We encourage residents to use caution while out walking in the area - walk in groups, be aware of your surroundings, keep dogs on leash, and be extra cautious at dawn and dusk,” the post reads.
The BC Conservation Officer Service generally advises residents to be aware of their surroundings, keep an eye on children and pets, particularly near dawn and dusk, avoid hiking or jogging alone, and to make noise when possible.
Anyone who sees a cougar should not approach, but maintain a safe distance and back away slowly. Never run.
Because of this animal’s behaviour, police advise anyone who encounters it to walk away slowly and contact 911 and the BC Conservation Service at 1-877-952-7277.
