Saanich Coun. Colin Plant is preparing for his big leap into federal politics in the upcoming election.

After securing the NDP nomination for MP in Saanich-Gulf Islands, Plant requested an unpaid leave of absence for his campaign at the Feb. 23 council meeting.

Currently juggling several jobs, serving as a Saanich councillor, Capital Regional District (CRD) board member, and a drama teacher at Claremont Secondary, Plant said continuing as a councillor would be unfeasible.

“I don't think it'll be a surprise to anybody that I'm seeking to be a member of parliament,” said Plant who was nominated back in April 2024. “I do not think it is viable to be a member of this council and also be campaigning at the same time.”

With an election likely arriving before October, Plant informed the council well in advance of his intention to step down as a councillor once summoned by his party.

“I will write a letter to the mayor and to staff [asking] for a leave of absence.”

Plant told Saanich News that serving as an MP has been a long-cherished goal of his.

“It’s been a dream to serve in Ottawa one day,” he said on April 29 following his nomination. “Now I’m on the path to pursuing that dream.”

He will attempt to unseat incumbent MP Elizabeth May of the Green Party.
