Saanich Police responded to an incident onboard a BC Transit bus involving a person in “mental distress, in possession of weapons and actively harming themselves.”

Police were first notified of the incident just before 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday (April 9). They responded to the incident at the bus’ location near the intersection of Ash Road and Tyndall Avenue, closing the area off to the public and traffic.

Patrol officers with the assistance of the Greater Victoria Emergency Response Team and Crisis Negotiators established a dialogue with the person and successfully de-escalated the situation, said Saanich PD in a news release.

“They surrendered to police, were taken into custody under the mental health act and transported to hospital for care,” Saanich PD said.

In an emailed statement, BC Transit confirmed all passengers and employees had safely departed the bus. "Our thoughts are with everyone who experienced this incident," they said.

During the incident, BC Transit said it was actively supporting the police and emergency response personnel. "Our organization would like to thank our transit operator, trainer, transit supervisor and Saanich Police for their actions and assistance during this evolving situation."

The area was reopened to traffic and the public shortly after 3 p.m.

Saanich PD has urged anyone in crisis to seek help. “There are many resources available, including the BC Crisis Line at 1-800-784-2433.”
