A driver has been barred from getting behind the wheel for about three months after police clocked them going over 70 km/h above the speed limit while impaired.
Saanich police officers pulled over the driver just before 11 p.m. on Sunday (Aug. 19) after they were found to be going 123 km/h in the 3900-block of Quadra Street, where the posted speed limit is 50 km/h. Police said the driver failed a roadside test for impairment.
The driver received a ticket for excessive speeding, had their licence suspended for 90 days and got their vehicle impounded for 30 days.
Police highlighted how the incident came after 10 other impaired drivers were caught in Saanich over the weekend. All of those incidents led to drivers receiving licence suspensions and most saw vehicles being impounded, police added.
The force said impaired driving is a serious threat to public safety and implored the public to avoid it by calling a taxi, using ride-sharing services or arranging to be picked up.
“When you drive under the influence, you endanger not only your own life but the lives of everyone around you," Saanich police said in a news release. "Your decision can save lives and keep our community safe."
