Forty instructors at Camosun College are being recognized for their innovative, engaging and flexible approaches in meeting the needs of their students.
Starting at 2 p.m. on Friday, May 2, students and Camosun employees will gather at the Sherri Bell Hall at the Lansdowne campus to honour the educators. While nominations came in from across the college, the vast majority of nominations were submitted by students.
“This grassroots annual celebration, which was developed by faculty for faculty, gives us the opportunity to shine a light on the incredible work being done at the college to support student learning,” said Martha McAlister, education developer with the Dr. Lloyd Morin Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning. “It’s inspiring to see how students are willing to take time out of their busy lives to acknowledge the teachers they appreciate, who have made such a difference in their lives.”
From challenging students to leading with passion, there were myriad reasons why teachers were nominated.
For instance, Brianna Waldman, a sport management instructor, was nominated by a student because of her effort in showing care.
“Brianna truly cares about us, understanding the demands of student life and how external variables can affect performance,” said one student. “She’s always there to support any way she can, so students can put their best foot forward.”
Biology teacher Brooke Cameron was nominated for being "engaged, experienced, flexible, and also hilarious," another student said.
"She loves science, and her passion makes a challenging course accessible and fun ... Her encouragement and creativity empowered me to flourish not only in her class but all my others. I love her.”
Eight students and two colleagues put nursing instructor Sue Abuleal's name forward for an award.
“Sue has left a lasting positive impression on me,” said one of Abuleal's students. “The pressure of school can be overwhelming, but her empathy and light-heartedness helped ease our nerves and make the learning process more enjoyable. The way Sue interacted with patients, showed genuine kindness, inspiring me to be that kind of nurse.”
The event will include a presentation of certificates, followed by an opportunity for photos and mingling.
