Sidney opens first of its kind 'Changing Places' washroom for all

Those with complex disabilities and their caregivers can access the new washroom facility

The Town of Sidney has officially opened a new public washroom facility featuring a specialized ‘Changing Places’ room designed to support individuals with complex disabilities and their caregivers.

The announcement on Friday, June 13, marked a significant step forward in making the Town more accessible.

Located in Seaport Park, near Beacon Park, the Changing Places facility offers a “higher level of service than standard accessible washrooms.”

It includes a height-adjustable adult change table, an electric hoist and ample space for caregivers to assist users comfortably and safely.

This is the first facility of its kind in Sidney.

"Making Sidney more accessible is an ongoing priority for the Town," said Mayor Cliff McNeil-Smith. "We want to ensure all community members and visitors can enjoy our beautiful downtown with comfort and dignity."

The washroom building also houses four additional toilets, including two accessible stalls, further enhancing the convenience for all park users.

Its prime location near the downtown waterfront, a popular area for community events and a year-round walking route, makes it a valuable asset.

The project received funding from the Government of Canada's Enabling Accessibility Fund and the Province of BC's Growing Communities Fund.
