Fire crews responded to a structure fire at Sooke’s Sunny Shores Resort and Marina on Tuesday evening (Jan. 22).

“Crews acted quickly to contain the fire and ensure everyone’s safety,” said Sooke Fire Chief Wayne Kennedy. “Thank you to our Sooke Fire Rescue personnel and mutual aid partners for their good work with response, suppression and containment.”

The fire was contained to a single cabin on the property as crews were called to the scene around 6:12 p.m. While the unit sustained considerable damage, no injuries have been reported. The unit's occupants had access to alternate accommodations, so Emergency Support Services were not required.

Preliminary reports suggest the fire started due to a cooking incident, but further investigation is planned to determine an exact cause.

A GoFundMe page has been established for the cabin's resident.

“I’m creating this fund to help a longtime friend Dwayne Dussome, who tragically lost everything in a house fire tonight,” said Amber Lalond. the page's creator stated in its description. “Thankfully, everyone made it out safe, but he now owns nothing except the clothes he was wearing.”

The post further stated that Dussome's main need was to find a new home for himself and his cat, but the funding raised would also go towards necessities such as clothing and food.

Engine One and three district Fire Rescue personnel were on scene to provide fire suppression, keeping the fire contained to the single cabin. They were followed by an additional support crew on Engine 12, along with mutual aid partners. Other regional departments stood by for assistance.
