The Sooke Fall Fair is coming early this year – and to a new location.

For the first time, the 112th annual Sooke Fall Fair will be held at Fred Milne Park on Aug. 23 and 24.

"We are thrilled to welcome everyone to our new location. We are ‘planting a seed’ for the future and evolving with the changing demographics in our community, while embracing and reconciling with our past by making our fair completely accessible, inclusive and reflective of the community," said Lisa Nilsson, president of the Sooke Fall Fair Association.

"This year, we're not just moving locations; we're elevating our commitment to ensuring every member of our community feels welcome and can fully participate in the joy of this Sooke tradition."

Nilsson said weather conditions, ongoing roadwork and limited parking all contributed to the decision to move the fair from its typical location at the Sooke Community Hall.

This year’s edition will feature enhanced mobility measures, accessible facilities and inclusive programming. A new layout will provide more space and eliminate barriers for individuals using wheelchairs, strollers or other mobility aids.

Accessible washrooms and rest areas will be included to ensure comfort and convenience for attendees, along with ample parking.

The fair's programming will go beyond traditional exhibits to engage diverse interests and abilities, creating a truly welcoming atmosphere.

Organizers hope that hosting the event at Fred Milne Park will improve accessibility, though the location change also means the fair will take place in August instead of its usual September slot.

The move also allows the fair to be held in conjunction with the Sooke Car Show, taking place Aug. 23 – one of Nilsson’s favourite parts of the festivities.

"Back by popular demand, the impressive Sooke Fall Fair Car Show will showcase a dazzling array of classic and custom vehicles, appealing to enthusiasts of all ages," said a news release from the Sooke Fall Fair Association.

Nilsson said one of the things she’s most looking forward to is collaborating with the T’Sou-ke Nation, who will be conducting what she described as a cultural sharing experience. She’s also excited to see the community come together.

“Just having all the entries and exhibits from our very talented community members – from growing prize-winning zucchinis to photography that is absolutely outstanding, to artwork from people of all ages.”

The fair is also set to feature pony rides, an evening concert and a beer garden.

Beloved agricultural displays that feature homegrown produce, vibrant flowers and baked goods, will of course be featured, along with arts, crafts and photography. The pet parade tradition will also continue.

This year’s fair theme is “Plant a Seed,” and encourages participation from all corners of the community.

“Whether you’re entering an exhibit, showcasing a classic car or simply coming to soak in the vibrant atmosphere, the 112th Sooke Fall Fair promises a weekend of unforgettable fun, community connection and celebration for everyone,” the news release said.

The fair will take place Saturday, Aug. 23 and Sunday, Aug. 24, at Fred Milne Park, 2249 Sooke River Rd. Admission is by donation.
