Victoria Firefighters responded to reports of an individual in the water near the Johnson Street Bridge on Nov. 23.

Firefighters have braved the cold of the Inner Harbour in response to reports of a person in the water near the Johnson Street Bridge.

The call came in at 11.30 p.m. on Nov. 23., according to a Victoria Firefighters International Association of Firefighters Union (IAFF) Local 730 social media post.

Victoria Fire Boat 1 conducted a search of the waterway, with additional fire crews and Victoria Police assisting with the search on the shoreline.

"The patient was quickly located beneath the outriggers of a large private vessel," said IAFF Local 730.

Because of the location of the person, a traditional rescue from the vessel was not possible, reports  IAFF Local 730. Instead, two firefighters entered the water to rescue the person.

Once rescued, the patient was transferred to the care of a waiting ambulance crew.

"The firefighters who entered the water were promptly rewarmed aboard the vessel," said IAFF Local 730.
