A gathering in Victoria on Sunday, March 24 marked the 34th anniversary of one of Canada's largest missing-person investigations.

In 1991, four-year-old Michael Dunahee disappeared near the Blanshard School playground in Victoria, just a short distance from his parents who were preparing for a flag football practice. Many families were in the area at the time of the practice. An extensive search was launched, which involved hundreds of volunteers and police from multiple agencies, but the boy was never found.

Every year, dozens gather for Keep The Hope Alive Walk/Run to show support for Dunahee's family, highlight the ongoing search and raise money for Child Find B.C. – a non-profit that delivers services to families whose children go missing unexpectedly. This year's event has raised $1,870 so far.

"Michael’s family has turned their tragedy into a grassroots effort to protect other families," VicPD said in a news release. "The annual ... Walk/Run has been a fixture in our community."

The police department is asking those with information about Dunahee's disappearance to visit vicpd.ca/michaeldunaheetips – a tips line VicPD launched in 2021 to mark 30 years since the boy was last seen. People can also contact VicPD’s dedicated Michael Dunahee Tip Line at 250-995-7444.
