B.C.'s oldest active synagogue will be welcoming a new rabbi as Rabbi Harry Brechner retires after 24 years and Rabbi Elisha Herb takes the helm.

Coming from Salem, Oregon, Herb will be taking over the 19th-century Congregation Emanu-El at the corner of Blanshard Street and Pandora Avenue. Along with regular services and a Hebrew School, the synagogue also co-sponsors Syrian and Palestinian-Syrian refugees, supports those who are unhoused, and collects donations for marginalized groups across Greater Victoria.

“As much as I’ve helped to grow this community, it’s also grown me,” said Brechner in a news release. “The people I’ve met, the joy and pain I’ve had entrée to, and the relationships I’ve developed all inform how I understand our place in the world as a Jewish people. I hope Rabbi Eli has a similar experience. I know I’m handing our synagogue into very capable and caring hands."

Last year, Brechner received The King Charles III Coronation Medal for his contributions to interfaith connections, social justice, and community dialogue in B.C. Earlier this year he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York City for over 25 years of distinguished service.

“I am honoured to continue Rabbi Harry’s legacy and to offer spiritual guidance and new leadership at Emanu-El,” said Herb in the release. “When I visited in the spring, I immediately felt a deep connection with the synagogue and the city. I am thrilled at the opportunity to be rabbi of such a special community in a special place.”

A retirement party for Brechner is planned for September, and a formal installation ceremony for Herb will be held later this fall.
