HMCS Calgary is back in the hands of the Royal Canadian Navy after a two-year refit.

His Majesty's Canadian Ship (HMCS) Calgary has returned to the Royal Canadian Navy base in Esquimalt after Seaspan's Victoria Shipyards successfully completed a major refit of the Halifax-class vessel.

The docking work period (DWP) for HMCS Calgary is the largest ever completed at the shipyard and included engineering upgrades, equipment installations, preventative and corrective maintenance, and "critical" dry docking activities.

"This DWP is a significant milestone for the entire Victoria Shipyards team, and underscores our commitment to quality, customer service, and to the Royal Canadian Navy," noted Tony Winter, general manager of the shipyard, in a news release.

Following a six-month planning phase, the Halifax-class vessel arrived at the shipyard in January 2023, and over the two years that followed, more than 1,000 trades and office staff contributed to the project.

The next West Coast-based Halifax-class frigate to undergo a refit is HMCS Winnipeg, which arrived at the shipyard last year.

The Calgary will now be transferred back to the RCN's Fleet Maintenance Facility, where staff will reactivate the ship's systems in preparation for future deployment.

HMCS Calgary, a 134-metre frigate that was commissioned in 1995, is celebrating its 30th anniversary on June 15 at Ogden Point between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. The free event will feature food, an opening military parade, live music, face painting, navy displays, a beer garden and a road hockey exhibition game.
