A plucky Pomeranian has been given a second chance at life after coming off second-best in a dog fight.
The seven-year-old dog named Gracie by BC SPCA staff, was brought in to a Victoria veterinary clinic with a devastating eye injury.
Sadly for the dog, the injured eye had been dislodged from its socket and could not be saved, requiring immediate surgery to remove it. After the fight, Gracie was surrendered by her owner to the BC SPCA through the veterinary clinic.
“The clinic contacted us hoping we could provide this sweet dog with the care she desperately needed,” said Emma Hamill, manager of the BC SPCA Victoria animal centre in a news release. “We didn’t hesitate to step in and agreed to cover the costs of the surgery and any further treatments she might require.”
Gracie underwent surgery and received essential post-operative care, including pain relief and antibiotics. Post-recovery, she will also receive spay and oral surgery.

Now in a foster home, the animal rescue organization says Gracie is slowly recovering – not just from her physical wounds, but from the emotional trauma of the dog fight incident.
But her personality is beginning to emerge. Hamil describes her as a picky eater with impeccable manners.
“Gracie is a loving, affectionate little dog and is becoming more confident every day,” said Hamill.
“[She] loves to sit on her foster’s lap. Gracie has a real interest in exploring the world around her and loves going for walks – she is building up her fitness.”
Donations to the BC SPCA have so far raised over $4,500 for Gracie to help with her care, with Petsecure Pet Health Insurance offering to chip in an additional $3,000.
If funds raised go above and beyond the needs of Gracie, the money will be used to help the next animal who needs urgent medical care.
Gracie will be featured on the BC SPCA’s website when she becomes available for adoption.
