West Shore RCMP's traffic unit has issued a friendly reminder to all drivers: “Our roads are not Mario Kart tracks.”
The tongue-in-cheek warning was made following an incident on Monday Sept. 23, when police responded to reports of a go-kart driving aggressively in heavy traffic on Peatt Road and Hockley Avenue in Langford.
Behind the wheel of the go-kart was a 45-year-old man. His go-kart was towed, and he was charged with having no vehicle licence.
According to Cpl. Nancy Saggar, media relations officer for West Shore RCMP, when the call first came in, police suspected the driver might be impaired or young.
“No, this was a 45-year-old individual,” said Saggar. “Made a bad decision.”
To add insult to injury, the driver might have evaded capture if he hadn’t led police directly to his whereabouts. During his escapades, the go-kart had driven over a can of white spray paint dropped on the road by the wannabe Mario.
“[To] leave a paint trail to where you're parked, is also great for us,” said Saggar.
“You can't play Mario Kart in the middle of Langford … you're gonna get caught,” she added.
