Five University of Victoria basketball athetes were given the honourary call-up on Tuesday (Feb. 20) as they were named Canada West all-stars.

The five players recognized for their contributions on the court are Diego Maffia, Elias Ralph, Abigail Becker, Makena Anderson and Griffin Arnatt.

Maffia’s selection marks his fourth time being named an all-star and his second time receiving first-team accolades. The Vikes star led all Canada West and U SPORTS players in points per game.

After being named to the rookie all-star squad in 2021-2022, Ralph earned a second-team nod after posting UVic’s second-best scoring average.

Becker, one of the premier field goal shooters in the league, was selected to the third all-star team after finishing second in the Canada-West conference with a 58 per cent shooting average.

First-year players Anderson and Arnatt scored all-rookie team selections. Anderson averaged nine points a game in 16 starts for the Vikes, while also adding 37 steals on the year. Arnatt also averaged 9 points a game and posted a 45.5 three-point shooting percentage.

The women’s and men’s Vikes basketball teams secured a spot in the Canada West playoffs. The women will face Lethbridge in the play-in round on Feb. 21 in Abbotsford. The men have secured the top seed in the conference and will advance straight to the quarterfinals.
