A Saanich athlete has been selected to join Canada’s track and field team at the 2023 Santiago Pan American Games.

Callum Robinson will compete for the 200-metre crown and could choose to compete in other events at the games taking place from Oct. 20 to Nov. 5.

“This is one of the best competitions in the world,” said Ronald Hewer, who is one of Robinson’s coaches. “I think Callum has a wonderful opportunity to make the final and earn a medal. It’s not easy getting to this level and stepping on this global stage. This is very exciting.”

Robinson is currently studying biochemistry at Eastern Michigan University after earning an athletic scholarship.

It was a big summer for Robinson. He came away with the gold in the 200-metre at the NACAC U23 championship in Costa Rica. This was his first international competition, and he finished in 20.52 seconds in the final, which was his personal best. The NACAC championships were held from July 21 to 23.

“He ran an excellent race,” Hewer said. “He can now run great international times.”

Robinson continued his success by finishing fifth in the 200-metre race at the 2023 Bell Canadian Track and Field Championships. This was his first senior men’s final, and the event took place from July 27 to 30 in Langley.

“Things have really come together for him,” Hewer said. “He’s had such an incredible year.”

Hewes says Robinson has worked hard to get where he is today.

“Callum’s success has been almost all on him. He’s earned it.”
