A Victoria weightlifter took home a gold medal at the 2023 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in Noida, India.

Kathryn Lee competed for Team Canada in the women’s 71 kg weight category in the Junior portion of the event, which took place from Wednesday to Sunday. This was Lee’s first international competition.

Lee was successful on four of six attempts, matching her personal bests of 84 kg in the snatch lift, and 108 kg in the clean and jerk lift, which completed the goal total of 192 kg. This goal is the current standard that Canadian athletes in Lee’s category need to achieve to qualify for the Junior World Championships, which will be held in Guadalajara, Mexico from Nov. 15 to 23.

Lee has one more major event within the Junior Worlds qualifying period, which will take place in Lake Country from Aug. 18 to 20, where she will look to secure her spot on the Junior Worlds national team.
