Dallas Road residents say pedestrians and cyclists are lucky to be alive after a driver crashed onto a path in Victoria, crashing into some park benches.
The incident happened on Sunday (June 11) at the area known as Clover Point – popular with residents and tourists who get off nearby at the cruise ship terminal – with a vehicle hopping a curb and taking out two of the benches.
According to area residents, the area is notorious for drivers going too fast and then not being able to handle the curve in the road.
“Car smashed into the benches at Clover Point,” said a post on the Twitter account @baronjutter. “So many low-skill drivers speed and fail to take the corner on Dallas here. Should just traffic calm all of Dallas rd into a bunch of 2-3 block dead ends as drivers clearly can’t behave on it. They even left a chunk of their light.”
Area resident Alieda Blandford responded to the post by saying the area is bad for such incidents.
“I live on Dallas Rd, and the number of cars I witness speeding by at highway speeds is insane,” Blandford wrote. “The limit is 30km/h! Some folks drag race this strip as well. We need more speed/traffic enforcement in the city, where the vulnerable road users are.”
Others responded with ideas about how to make this area safer.
“So much could be solved by closing down the section of dallas in front of the cemetery,” wrote one person. “So many losers use that strip to speed. Put another diverter in maybe at Linden. There would still be car access, but it wouldn’t be a continuous highway for people to do loser laps.”

“Could divert at the east side of Clover Point - enough space there for a turnaround even for buses,” wrote another.
Corey Burger, a Victoria cycling advocate, also chimed in.
“Ya, by diverting road, no need for expensive construction east of there,” Burger wrote.
“It’s absolutely whack that cars are allowed on Dallas at all,” wrote another person.
