VIDEO: Excessive speed on the Malahat captured by dash cam footage

Poster calls driving ‘dangerous, obnoxious and disrespectful’

A dash cam video uploaded to Facebook on Monday shows a silver vehicle driving at dangerous speeds on the Malahat.

The video was recorded Jan. 12 at 3:45 p.m. and shows a silver sedan changing lanes before speeding past the car recording.

In a comment, uploader Nicholas Timmenga defended his decision to post the video, saying: “As part of the car community, it’s infuriating to see behavior like this. Respectful people are getting hassled all over the place for tasteful mods and this guy spits in the face of traffic law. Ear splittingly loud exhaust, and an insane amount of speed; it’s dangerous, obnoxious, and disrespectful.”

“People like this tighten the speeding limits for everyone else, and cause more traffic enforcement.”

Cpl. Chris Dovell of the West Shore RCMP said police use public dash cam videos to identify dangerous drivers.

“Street racing and dangerous driving remain a significant problem on our roadways. Police have zero tolerance for aggressive driving offences and [have] the authority to seize vehicles and prohibit drivers,” he said.

Dovell said if possible, witnesses should obtain a license plate.

“Witnesses to aggressive driving offences can observe and report to their local police,” he said. “Do not use hand held electronic devices to record other motorists if you are driving. Dash cams or passengers may use digital recording devices to capture evidence for police.”
