A man has been charged after numerous fires were set along a highway in Nanaimo earlier this week.

Kevin Macey-Girard, 35, was arrested while crews were battling the fires on Tuesday, July 4, and has been held in police custody, stated a Nanaimo RCMP press release. He is charged with arson and mischief, as well as an unrelated break-and-enter charge from a June 15 incident.

A bail hearing was held Thursday, July 6, said RCMP, at which time the charges were laid.

Macey-Girard has been remanded into police custody, noted the press release and his next court appearance is Tuesday, July 11, at provincial court in Nanaimo.

Police had to close traffic along the parkway in order to allow firefighters to battle the blazes.
