Diners in Esquimalt are expressing sadness that their go-to restaurant has closed forever – but they are curious about its Filipino replacement set to open soon.

Wednesday (June 21) was the final day for Guido’s at 614 Grenville Ave., an Italian restaurant tucked away off the main strip in Esquimalt.

The restaurant was known for everything from its pizza to its coffee to its baked goods.

“It’s so depressing,” said Edgar Watson, who was standing outside of Guido’s on its final day. “Great service and lots of different stuff you can find in the rest of Esquimalt. Their food was amazing and consistent. They leave big shoes to fill for its replacement.”

Guido’s had managed to thrive during the COVID-19 pandemic, pivoting to a steady takeout service that had people lined up to pick up food.

The good news for diners is that a new restaurant is taking over the Guido’s space and will be having a “slow opening” starting on Monday, June 26 and 27 from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. with all-day breakfast that includes eggs benedict, Spanish omelettes, French toast and waffles. The restaurant is called Benjamin’s and it will also be serving Filipino rice bowls.

Then, on Canada Day, Benjamin’s will have a soft opening serving its full menu that will have Filipino dishes and more. Stay tuned for more details.
