Re: Home ownership elusive for many in Capital Region (News, Aug. 14)
Although I have always lived within my means, it took me more than 20 years to save a down payment large enough to get into the Victoria real estate market.
After four years of condo shopping, my partner and I finally found one that we could afford and purchased it one year ago. I was 46 and so relieved to end the money-down-the-drain cycle of renting.
Even though we have a mortgage, I don’t worry about it. The mortgage, property tax and strata fees are no more than what we used to pay for rent. And now I can grow old knowing that I probably won’t be on the street when I hit 70.
