The Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria.

Not only was the current physician shortage avoidable, it also highlights the need for health-care systems to prioritize improving the work environment and supporting physician well-being to retain staff.

Factors like burnout, inadequate support systems, and systemic issues within health care contribute to the shortage. Many doctors experience burnout due to the demanding nature of their work and a lack of support systems. This can lead to increased rates of stress, job dissatisfaction, and ultimately, a desire to leave the profession.

Addressing the shortage requires a comprehensive approach that includes creating positive work environments, supporting mental health, addressing regulatory barriers, and investing in well-being as an institutional value. Until then, the provincial government should brace itself for further criticism.

Mr. Premier, get moving. Apply yourself.
