So the mayor of Saanich thinks we misunderstood his plans and he is backing down from making McKenzie one lane for vehicles alongside lanes for bikes and buses. I think it is easier for him to think we misunderstood than to admit he was possibly wrong. And nowhere does he mention Quadra. Is that busy thoroughfare still slatted for his axe? First, he allows a condo to be built in the residential area of Palmer and Quadra and then he wants to reduce Quadra to one lane. Brilliant!
Elsewhere, I noted that the men representing the “pro-McKenzie one lane group” were standing with their bicycles. Funnily, this area in Saanich has many of the people who were early residents of this district and they are trying to “age in place”. It is not possible for them to ride bicycles like these younger men do. It seems as if the coming generation wants to walk all over the residents who have a long history here.
Furthermore, when I was driving in the pouring rain during December, there were no bicycles in sight. Nor do I see them in the snow drifts. The next Saanich election cannot come fast enough for me. I definitely know who I will not be voting for.
