Saanich’s planned municipal-wide downgrade to 30 km/h in areas without yellow lines on the road is farcical. School zones are 30 km/h, and we know what a snail's pace that is. Although the school zones are very much necessary.

According to statistics, the average recreational cyclist goes 34.9 km/h, so that would mean cars are going slower than the average cyclist. While driving on Lockside Drive the other day, I tried the 30 km/h zone and was passed by several cyclists who were out for a leisurely pace, not racing, just moving along.

Where I live is on a very narrow road with many crossroads and has a yellow line. The road next to it, which is the thoroughfare to Cordova Ridge off of Royal Oak, is extremely wide and has no yellow lines. So that means on a very narrow, unsafe road, travellers will be able to go 50 km/h, but on the very safe road will only be able to go 30. They talk about car evaporation, what I’d like to see is councillor evaporation.
