On a recent visit to Victoria, I read the column in the Victoria News newspaper titled 'The world does not view Canada through American eyes.'

I agree with the author that nasty is “not the word that typically comes to mind when one thinks of Canada”. And, as a citizen of the United States, I apologize to all Canadians for the recent disgraceful comments of our president the article references. They are as shocking to citizens of the United States as they are for all of you and they represent the thinking of only one person, our current president.

They are not the view of citizens of the United States. I wish the title of the article had been 'The world does not view Canada through the U.S. president’s eyes', as most of the citizens of the United States have great admiration and respect for Canada and its people. You are a “pillar of global democracy” as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recently described, and I have learned over my lifetime you are a deeply caring, hard-working, and fun-loving people who will give others in need the shirts off you’re your back.

Keep being proud Canadians, for you have every right to be, and keep in perspective the fact that the citizens of the United States admire and respect you as I do.
