If you happen to still be sleeping at 8:45 a.m. this Sunday in Esquimalt, don’t be alarmed if you hear a big gun going off at that time.

Instead of the traditional starting pistol, a C3 Howitzer gun will be fired once to start CFB Esquimalt’s annual Navy Run, which this year falls on Father’s Day (June 18).

The annual family oriented event, overseen by the Department of National Defence and Royal Canadian Navy includes 10-kilometre and 5K distances, as well as a kid’s run starting at 8 a.m. The longer routes take runners through the Township of Esquimalt’s residential streets, starting and ending just inside the security gates on Admirals Road leading to Naden.

The awards ceremony, officiated over by CFB Esquimalt leadership, happens at 11 a.m. For more information on the routes or to sign up, visit navyrunesquimalt.com.
