Oak Bay Mayor Nils Jensen not only threw the first hardball of the Carnarvon Ball season, but inspired its young people with a tale of the park’s history during opening day on Sunday.
“Kids you’re joining a baseball club and park that has an incredible amount of history,” Jensen said. He went on to tell the tale of John, who came from Seattle for a tournament at the Oak Bay field. He smacked a ball so hard it hit a nearby house.
“An amazing feat,” Jensen said, revealing that player was John Olerud, who went on to play of the Toronto Blue Jays. “One of you out there is going to be a John Olerluld or Jane Olerud.”
MLA Andrew Weaver, threw the first softball pitch of the season and also took a moment to inspire all on hand.
“I’m so excited to see so many people here. So many children, so many parents so many volunteers, it’s integral to our community.”
