Three parks, two championships, one massive week for baseball in Greater Victoria.
From July 24-28, the Greater Victoria Baseball Association (GVBA) is hosting the U15AA Provincial Championships at Langford’s Luxton Park and Saanich’s Layritz Park, while the U13AA championship is taking place simultaneously at Carnarvon Park in Oak Bay.
Ten teams are competing in the U15AA tournament, including two local squads – Triangle, the tournament hosts, and Carnarvon Ball Club.
They’re joined by clubs from White Rock, Langley Township, Nanaimo, North Delta, North Island, Vancouver, Richmond, and Ridge Meadows.
The U13AA bracket features Victoria alongside Prince George, Richmond, Cloverdale, Campbell River, White Rock, Cranbrook, Vernon, and Ridge Meadows.
“It’s a big success for us just to be out here,” said Danny O’Regan, assistant coach with Triangle and host coordinator for the tournament. “We debated at the start of the year whether we wanted to take on the tournament – it’s a big lift, but we’re glad we did.”
Triangle opened the U15 tournament with a 13-3 loss to a powerful White Rock squad, but O’Regan said his players embraced the challenge and the spotlight.
“For us, we’re the host – it’s almost like playing with house money,” he said. “We just wanted the kids to go out, compete, and enjoy the experience in front of their parents and the volunteers.”
Lucas Aschenbrenner earned MVP honours for Triangle after delivering a solid effort on the mound, keeping the game close through the middle innings.
Running the U15 tournament has taken a team effort, with around 25 to 30 volunteers from Triangle handling everything from field prep and scorekeeping to raffle tickets and the volunteer tent.
“They’re doing everything – we couldn’t do it without them,” O’Regan said. “We’re all volunteer-based, so to make this happen across Luxton and Layritz is a real community accomplishment.”
While Triangle oversees the U15 event, the Victoria Seawolves are managing U13 play at Carnarvon.
Both tournaments fall under the GVBA banner, showcasing the region’s strength as a hub for youth baseball.
Championship games for both divisions are set for Sunday, July 28, one day prior to the start of the 2025 National Little League Championship at Layritz Park.
