Historic Colwood castle sets stage for iconic Hatley 8K

The event draws runners to a course that highlights both athletic challenge and the region’s heritage

The Vancouver Island Race Series stages its annual Hatley 8K road race this weekend at Hatley Castle, an early-20th-century landmark steeped in history.

Built in 1908–09 for coal magnate James Dunsmuir, the castle’s grand facade and intricate design reflect the ambition of its era. Over the decades, it has hosted distinguished guests and appeared in several films.

Runners will tackle an 8‑kilometre course that blends athletic challenge with a journey through time. The race begins and ends at the castle. Participants follow a route that winds along paved paths, tree-lined trails, and unpaved sections. Moderate elevation changes make the course accessible to athletes of all levels.

“There is something truly special about the hallowed grounds of Hatley Castle. Additionally, the stunning views of the Olympic Mountains, downtown Victoria and the lagoon create a unique race experience,” said Christopher Kelsall, general manager of the race series.

“Last year we set a record of 505 finishers and now, with our new post-race facility, we expect nearly 660 athletes on Sunday. Register early because there is no day-of registration.”

The race starts at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 23, at Royal Roads University (2005 Sooke Rd., Colwood), next to the castle. Participants can register online at islandseries.org.

The Hatley 8K is the fourth race in the Vancouver Island Race Series. Other events include the Westcoast Sooke 10K on March 9; the Comox Valley RV Half-Marathon in Courtenay on March 23; the McLean Mill 10K in the Alberni Valley on April 6; and the Synergy Health Bazan Bay 5K in North Saanich on April 13. The Bastion 12K in Lantzville was cancelled on Feb. 9 and will be rescheduled.
