Jock Talk: CW vs. Comox in weekend Windsor rugby tilt

Rugby fans can follow the Castaway Wanderers’ women’s premier squad on the road Saturday when they take on the Westshore women at 12:45 p.m. at Juan de Fuca field. After the game, head to Oak Bay’s Windsor Park for a 2:30 p.m. tilt between the Div. 1 CW men and Comox.

With many high school fall sports seasons drawing to a close, senior girls’ volleyball playoffs continue, with teams vying this week to compete for the Vic Lindal and Veterans cups. Keep up to date with results and schedules at lowerislandschoolsports.ca.

In senior boys volleyball, Vic High hosts Oak Bay along with Claremont and Stelly’s secondary schools beginning at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 1 before teams head into Lower Island playoffs next week.

Senior boys soccer also opens playoffs this week with seeding still being determined at time of writing. Stay up to date at lowerislandschoolsports.ca.

In community sports, lower Island men’s soccer kicks off this week in Oak Bay with the MC Bays United team hosting Lakehill on Friday, Oct. 27 at 7 p.m. at the Oak Bay High turf.

Basketball fans have a lot to cheer this weekend as the University of Victoria Vikes men and women hit the hardwood for their home openers.

The men take a 5-3 pre-season record into this weekend’s Canada West series against the UBC Okanagan Heat, with tip-off at 8 p.m. tonight (Friday, Oct. 27) and 7 p.m. Saturday at CARSA.

Dani Sinclair returns as the women’s head coach, leading her team into back-to-back home games against UBC Okanagan. The women take the CARSA floor at 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 27 and 5 p.m. Saturday.

Following a successful weekend on the water for the Head and Tail of the Gorge, the Vikes rowers host teams from Western Canada at Elk Lake this Saturday, Oct. 28 for the Western Canadian University Rowing Championship. Head to the lake for a day full of racing concluding with women’s and men’s varsity 8s shortly after 3 p.m.
