Sweet races on tap for weekend at Western Speedway

Langford tri-oval hosting annual Strawberry Cup races Friday and Saturday

Winged sprint car drivers from around Vancouver Island and beyond will contest the annual Strawberry Cup championship Friday and Saturday night at Western Speedway.

The Wilroc non-winged sprint cars are also on the card, along with the Old-Time Racers and dwarf cars.

Practice starts and the front gate opens at 4:30 p.m. Qualifying goes at 5:30, with racing to start at 6:30.

Among last Saturday’s big winners was Bobby Cyr, who took the checkered flag in the 50-lap bomber class main event ahead of Brian Wakelin, Megan McCullam and Ron Benham, respectively. Cyr also won the second heat.

In the mini figure eight division, Brandon Young captured top spot in the 40-lap main, followed in order by Kyle Rizok, Tanner Jacobs and Kail Beck.

The combined car/truck demo main saw Aasen Baker cruise to victory ahead of George Haywood, James Young and Billy Stidson.
