Team de Jong from the Victoria Curling Club overcame a slow start to come out on top of the B.C. Men's Curling Championship in Langley Sunday (Jan. 26).
The team – made up of skip Cameron de Jong, third Alex Horvath, second Corey Chester, lead Brayden Carpenter and alternate Paul Cseke – will now represent B.C. at the 2025 Montana’s Brier, Feb. 28 to March 9 in Kelowna.
Team de Jong faced a challenging path to victory, losing to Team Kolomaya, the eventual bronze medalists, in the third round of the A-event and to Team Deane in the 3rd round of the B-event in the triple-knockout format. They secured their playoff spot by winning a C-Qualifier and went on to defeat Team Deane in the C1 vs C2 game, followed by a semi-final win against Team Kolomaya. In a first-time matchup in the final, Team de Jong got past Team Venance with a hard-fought 10-8 victory.
Team Brown of the Kamloops Curling Club captured the women's crown with a 10-7 win over Victoria's Team MacMillan in the final of the event running Jan. 21-26.
The win avenged an 8-7 loss to the defending champion MacMillan rink in the round-robin, Team Brown's only loss at the event. Team MacMillan is made up of skip Kayla MacMillan, third Sarah Daniel, second Lindsay Dubue, lead Sarah Loken and coach Niklas Edin.
