For the tenth time, the Oak Bay Figure Skating Club (OBFSC) took home the Vancouver Island Region Championship trophy.
The competition took place Feb. 1 to Feb. 3 at the Archie Browning Sports Center.
Jamie McGrigor, director of the OBFSC, said the club had medaled skaters in almost every event. Each medal wins their club a certain amount of points, which are tallied together to determine the overall champion.
Not only was this the OBFSC’s tenth win, McGrigor said it’s their tenth in about 11 competitions.
“The first time we won it, it was awesome. The second time was a repeat. After the fourth, I said, ‘Are we a dynasty now? Did we become the Edmonton Oilers?’” McGrigor said. “We have a lot of kids and they are all good skaters. [Juan de Fuca Skating Club] did very well too, it had to have been close.”
McGrigor said it was a big competition, with virtually every town along the Island highway sending a team.
Up next, four skaters from the club will head to the provincial championships in March, then in early May the club will give a show for the local community.
“If you want to see these kids in a fun atmosphere, our ice show is on May 4,” McGrigor said. “It’s called Guardians Of Gravity. It’s space themed, and it’s on May the fourth.”
