While recent storms have kept many inside, a few intrepid volunteers were cleaning the streets of Langford.
The Greater Victoria Green Team (GVGT) and 35 community members braved the rain on Nov. 16 for The City of Langford's largest litter cleanup of the year.
The third litter cleanup of the year focused on Langford Station. Volunteers combined to dedicate 120 hours to removing 131 pounds of litter. The event was held in partnership with the City of Langford’s engineering department and the group was joined by Langford Couns. Mary Wagner and Kimberley Guiry. The councillors provided words of encouragement and shared their appreciation with volunteers.
Of the 35 volunteers, 17 were cleaning up litter for the first time, with 14 making their first-ever visit to Langford Station. The proud group of volunteers was met with support from the community as passersby honked from their cars and waved from their balconies.
The GVGT is a program of the wider Green Teams Canada (GTC), which focuses on engaging diverse people and notably young people hoping to inspire environmentally responsible behaviour.
"Bringing people together to make a tangible impact not only strengthens mental and physical well-being, but also nurtures a sense of belonging, a connection to nature, and instills hope for the future," said the Greater Victoria Green Team's Viloka Luna in a news release. "Initiatives like these allow us to care for both ourselves and our community, while also protecting the environment.
The Green Team will assemble once again on Dec.1 for their second-to-last event of the year. This time the group focuses on removing invasive English ivy at the University of Victoria campus.
