From strolls to spas, here are activities to keep your summer relaxing

Some like to cram in as much as they can during the summer: festivals, camping and road trips.

But, one important thing to ask yourself is, do I actually feel rested after planned activities, or do I feel like I need a vacation after my vacation?

Sometimes it's nice to keep things simple and plan an easy, restorative day with close-to-home activities that don't require too much planning or effort.

Below are examples of activities close to home that can help you de-stress and end the summer feeling that sunny glow inside and out.

Take a stroll around Swan Lake Christmas Hill Nature Sanctuary

Nothing says rejuvenating like a stroll in nature. Located in Saanich, this sanctuary includes Swan Lake, marshy lowlands, the Nature House and Christmas Hill. The lake loop trail is 2.5 km, and an easy, accessible hike, meandering over boardwalks, along the marshes and through the surrounding oak forest. With dogs forbidden, there is lots of wildlife out in the open here, including 228 bird species. Visit swanlake.com to learn more.

Try a paddleboarding experience

There's something about being on the water that's instantly grounding. Paddleboarding is a relaxing, lower-effort way to get the experience, and thanks to paddleboarding groups, it doesn't have to be a self-guided or solo activity. Companies such as Mer Tales, in partnership with South Island Sup, have curated memorable paddleboarding experiences such as Paddle & Snorkel, a Paddle Full Moon Ceremony, and a Marine Ecological Tour. Their offerings are led by a knowledgeable marine biologist at picturesque locations such as Gonzales Beach or Brentwood Bay.

Visit a farmer's market and connect with local producers

The push to buy local has never been stronger, and local farmers' markets are alive and flourishing this summer – including some exciting new ones. You can check out our Ultimate Guide to Greater Victoria Markets for a detailed, vibrant list. Pack your sunscreen, sunglasses, a reusable bag, some comfortable shoes and get ready to connect with local flavour – whether that be delicious produce, carefully crafted art or the sounds of talented musicians.

Have a local spa day

We often associate getaways with relaxation, but going to a spa can create the same feeling with a much lower price tag. Capitalizing on our ocean location is Havn, a Nordic spa on a floating barge in the midst of Victoria's Inner Harbour, or Oak Bay Beach Hotel, which offers day passes for access to seaside mineral pools, a hot tub and a sauna with 360-degree views of the ocean. These are just a few options in a sea of many that will leave you blissfully relaxed, calm and feeling like your vacation gave you the rest that you needed.
