Bloomin' wonderful: Beach advisory lifted for Saanich's Elk Lake

Swimming has been off the cards since May because of a blue-green algae bloom

The Capital Regional District and Island Health advise users against swimming as blue-green algae remains at Elk Lake and Beaver Lake.

There's good news for folks wanting to cool off in Saanich – the beach advisory for Elk Lake has been lifted.

The lake was first placed under an advisory in May by the Capital Regional District (CRD), in consultation with Island Health, because of a blue-green algae bloom.

It's presence, which exceeded Health Canada's safety threshold, forced organizers of the Ironman 70.3 Victoria to cancel the swim portion of the race.

The advisory was officially lifted Thursday (Aug. 14) by the CRD.

While one swimming spot leaves the CRD's watch list, two others joined it this week.

Oak Bay's Willows Beach and North Saanich's Bazan Bay Beach were both placed under an advisory Aug. 11 because of unsatisfactory bacteriological water-test results.

Other advisories remain in place for Beaver Lake, Thetis Lake Beach, Prior Lake and Ross Bay Beach.
