Officers impound 2 vehicles on 1 shift for excessive speed, impaired driving

Two drivers are down vehicles after a pair of stops in Central Saanich Tuesday night (June 24).

Central Saanich Police officers impounded two vehicles over the course of the night shift, the first for excessive speed, where a driver was clocked at 92km/h on Lochside Drive. The ticket comes with a $368 fine plus seven-day vehicle impound.

Later in the night, a roadblock was set up and another vehicle impounded for 30 days when the driver was found to be operating the vehicle while impaired, Central Saanich Police Service informed the community on social media.

An average of 63 people die every year in crashes involving impaired driving, according to ICBC statistics. About 21 per cent of police-reported fatal crashes are related to impaired driving.

“Speeding and impaired driving continue to be leading causes of death and serious injury on B.C.’s roadways,” the post reads. “When it comes to driving, we all play an important role in keeping our community safe. Do your part and drive safe, drive sober.”
