BC Transit is inviting Greater Victoria residents to travel greener this Earth Day.
To celebrate Earth Day on Tuesday, April 22, BC Transit has announced that free transit will be offered across the Victoria Regional Transit System.
“Shifting to more environmentally sustainable modes of transportation, such as public transit, drastically reduces the number of single occupant vehicles on the road, reduces traffic, and helps achieve an overall reduction in greenhouse gas emissions,” BC Transit stated in a news release.
In addition to offering some free rides, BC Transit has highlighted several other eco-friendly programs to celebrate Earth Day, including the Our Power Our Planet campaign running this month, which invites kids to learn how to protect the planet and learn more about BC Transit’s green practices.
“Our Low Carbon Fleet Program aligns with the province’s CleanBC Plan, and BC Transit is well on the path to achieving its mandate of reaching a 40 per cent reduction in fleet emissions by 2030 and a 60 per cent reduction by 2040.”
In addition to the Low Carbon Fleet, BC Transit is set to deliver 125 heavy-duty electric buses over the next three years, and 105 heavy-duty hybrid buses in addition to the 280 compressed natural gas buses in the fleet, intended to help reduce emissions.
