Despite recent concerns over business closures, Sidney's economic landscape is proving resilient with a "significant" influx of new businesses.

According to the Sidney Business Improvement Area Society's (BIA) annual report, 111 new businesses chose Sidney as their home in 2024.

"Our community has experienced a vibrant influx of new businesses, expansions and relocations, showcasing a dynamic and engaged business climate," said Sidney BIA president Devon Bird during the organization's annual general meeting on March 26.

The report highlighted the BIA's strategic marketing initiatives, business support programs and attraction efforts aimed at fostering growth within Sidney's economic core.

"Our mission remains to foster a thriving, diverse economy and promote Sidney as a vibrant, welcoming destination," added executive director Morgan Shaw.

In the past year, the BIA focused on strengthening partnerships, increasing community engagement and expanding Sidney's visibility to both tourists and locals.

A key component of their strategy was a targeted marketing campaign that included hiring 12 social media influencers.

The @ExploreSidney Instagram and Facebook campaign, powered by these influencers, reached an audience of 1.35 million potential visitors.

During the meeting, the BIA also announced its 2025 board of directors.

Devon Bird (Moden Boutique/Moden Essentials/Moden Men's) will continue as chair, with Nick Coates (Days Inn by Wyndham Victoria Airport Sidney) serving as vice-chair.

Robyn Walle (Baker Tilly CPA) will act as treasurer, and Cathy Larsen (Departures Travel) will be secretary. Sarah Scheller (The Surly Mermaid/The Five & Dime Diner), Jessica Sommers Dai (The Farmer's Daughter), Jayne Nelson (Waterlily Shoes/Provenance Fine Things) and Leslie Denko (Mortgage Alliance Cutting Edge Lending) will serve as directors.

The organization also acknowledged the resignation of Jessica O’Brien Cameron from CIBC Wood Gundy and expressed gratitude for her contributions.
