Near miss: Truck sends tree crashing into yard of Victoria home

Resident says she missed being struck by truck by seconds

A Fairfield woman is thanking her lucky stars after a 5-ton delivery truck crashed into a tree that toppled onto her driveway, just seconds before she arrived home.

"I was literally turning into the driveway when it happened. A truck came hurtling down," Amanda Butler said, pointing to tire skid marks on the driveway on a hill across the street near the intersection of Memorial Crescent. "It was really close to hitting me ... if I'd been a few seconds earlier, I would have been walking into the house when it happened."

A truck belonging to Trail Appliances crashed into a tree at 1448 Fairfield Rd. at around 12:30 p.m. Tuesday (June 10) after what Trail Appliances told Victoria News was a mechanical failure.

"The vehicle appears to have suffered a mechanical failure, which resulted in the truck rolling backwards from a steep driveway and across the road onto a neighbouring property. While property damage is involved, we are extremely grateful that no injuries have been reported," Trail Appliances said in an email to Victoria News.

"Safety is our top priority, and we're taking this matter very seriously. We are also in contact with the affected property owner to address any concerns and offer our support. We appreciate the understanding of the community."

The truck also nicked the side of a power pole and took out the cinder block fence, but Butler said the power appeared to still be working in the house.

Miraculously, Butler said, the tree not only missed her – it also barely missed hitting the house. "I even have a tiny little Buddha statue on the bottom stair there and it just didn't hit the Buddha.

"It's really wild, and luckily our animals were all inside."

"It was so scary," she added. "I literally felt like I must have a guardian angel."
